Willis-Ekbom disease - or restless legs

If you experience a number of ailments in your legs and only movement, e.g. walking, brings you relief – this may be a symptom of RLS (restless legs syndrome). Willis-Ekbom disease can be extremely troublesome.

It manifests itself especially at bedtime, when we feel a constant need to shake our legs. Perhaps at first it seems to be a temporary and harmless disease. Make sure, however, that you do not get Willis-Ekbom’s disease, the so-called restless leg syndrome.

The biggest problem is that the origin of the disease is still unknown. It points to the neurological basis of the disease, but opinions are still mixed. Importantly, 3% of the world’s population may suffer from this ailment.

Willis-Ekbom disease – what do we know about restless legs syndrome?

Statistics show that almost 10% of the world’s population shows certain symptoms related to a given disease. It affects both men and women of all ages. However, symptoms most often appear after the age of 40.

Neither a clear origin nor specific causes of the disease have yet been identified. However,  diabetes, anemia, renal failure and the effects of certain medications (e.g. antidepressants) are mentioned . In women, the disease often develops after pregnancy.

The disease is divided into two types. Willis-Ekbom disease is therefore divided into primary (hereditary) and secondary forms. In the first case, the origin of the disease is unknown, but it is indicated that it is present in the family.

It has been established that the disease is inherited in an autosomal dominant or, less frequently, an autosomal recessive manner. In the second case (secondary type) it is considered a consequence, a symptom of other neurological ailments.

Non-obvious symptomatology – symptoms of restless legs syndrome

The biggest problem in treating the disease is the problem of diagnosing the disease. Symptoms are confusing, varied and difficult to quantify . In some cases, Willis-Ekbom disease manifests itself initially only by the need to move the legs.

It does not change the fact that the disease is very often accompanied by other bothersome symptoms.

Some patients complain of discomfort and a feeling of heaviness in the legs. Sometimes it turns into cramps and tingling. Many of these symptoms occur at night, so they often cause insomnia and chronic sleep problems.

Of course, this results in tiredness and daytime sleepiness. In addition, the need for constant movement indicates a rhythmic tendency. This means that symptoms increase between afternoon and bedtime. Willis-Ekbom disease is a chronic disease that progresses over time.

Willis-Ekbom disease – diagnosis and diagnosis

It was necessary to establish a number of common symptoms that would allow for the effective identification of the disease. Below are the most common symptoms:

  • Restlessness and compulsion to move occur at rest:  this disease should not be confused with reflexes and hyperactivity. The compulsion to move and restlessness always occur when we rest.
  • Symptoms manifest at night:  this is the most characteristic feature of this condition. Most patients diagnosed with RLS do not feel compelled to move their lower limbs during the day.
  • Night cramps: This is one of the symptoms directly related to the disease. Cramps very often affect patients at night, while sleeping. However, they should not be the only symptom. If we only notice this symptom, it may indicate a lack of electrolytes or ordinary fatigue.
  • Relief that comes only with movement:  in this disease, relief comes when we meet the expectations of our body, i.e. move our legs. Movement will relieve tingling, pain and any discomfort.

Possible treatment for restless leg syndrome

First of all, remember that in the case of the ailments described, it will be appropriate to move around. You should then get out of bed and spread the problem for a few minutes.

Naturally, one of the most severe consequences is the deteriorating quality of life. All of this is due to difficulty falling asleep and chronic fatigue.

Unfortunately, her symptoms worsen with age. Importantly, there is not even an accurate diagnostic test, but still the only solution is to work with a doctor.
